A SATA DOM — disk on module — plugs a complete solid-state disk straight onto the motherboard header, removing the cable and the drive bay. Those are the two most common vibration failure points in a rack. They go into firewalls, network appliances, blade servers and embedded controllers that boot from a small fixed image. Reliable enough for a boot device? For a read-mostly image, yes — removing the cable and the mount is exactly why appliance vendors adopted the format. Two things to confirm before ordering. First, header clearance with the chassis closed. Second, whether your board supplies 5V on pin 7 — get that wrong and the module won’t power up.
